Common brickwork problems
- Eroded pointingEroded mortar leaves brickwork loose and dangerous, and lets water seep in, leading to the problems above. Replacing the eroded mortar removes the safety risk and stops further structural damage.
- Brick frettingThe crumbling, powdering or flaking of bricks or mortar, common on the weathered side of a building, in seaside suburbs and near pools. It's caused by incorrectly mixed mortar, or by a chemical reaction as salt crystals dry and dissolve in the hydrated lime mortar. With ongoing rain, salt and drying, the crystals grow larger and the mortar and bricks keep breaking down.
