What to consider

  • LumensLumens measure the light a lamp or light source produces, so think "lumens per watt". A good rule of thumb for a simple upgrade is to choose products that give nearly the same lumens as the lamp being replaced.
  • EfficiencyIncandescent and halogen light sources run at around 17–20 lumens per watt. Replacing them with LEDs can save up to 75–80% of the energy used.
  • ExpectationsBetter light quality gives sharper vision and a more comfortable atmosphere: two benefits you can't put a number on.
